[ARCHIVED] 2013 Solheim Cup to Donate to Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation

In light of another Colorado summer plagued by wildfires, the 2013 Solheim Cup will donate a percentage of its June ticket sales to the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation.

The funds will benefit the Foundation, which aids area fire fighters and their families. In addition, public safety officials such as police and fire fighters, will get in free to Colorado Golf Club on Tuesday, Aug. 14, for the Solheim Cup practice day.

With recent fires raging in Canon City near the Royal Gorge and in Black Forest, Colo., just miles from Soheim Cup host club Colorado Golf Club in Parker, organizers of the international match play event felt the need to give back.

“This is our way of saying thank you to all of the men and women who have worked so tirelessly to fight these horrible fires and to protect Colorado residents,” Solheim Cup Tournament Director Becky Newell said. “Fire fighters make tremendous sacrifices for others, and the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation is a great organization that looks after their best interests and well-being. We’re proud to be able to contribute in this way to those who do so much for us all.”

The 15,700-acre Black Forest fire destroyed more than 480 homes, displaced more than 40,000 residents and was 45 percent contained as of Sunday morning. The Royal Gorge blaze burned more than 3,200 acres, damaged or destroyed more than 50 structures and was 85 percent contained as of Saturday night.

The 501 (c)3 non-profit Foundation benefits Colorado fire fighters and their families and dependents who are victims of tragedies. Many of the needs of the widows/widowers and orphans of fallen fire fighters are overlooked after a tragedy. It was from this financial void that the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation was born.

More than 120,000 spectators are expected for the 2013 Solheim Cup, which features the top 12 women’s professional golfers from Europe against the United States’ top dozen stars. These teams are led by captains Meg Mallon for the United States and Liselotte Neumann for Europe. Europe won the last Solheim Cup in Ireland in 2011, but the U.S. Team has never lost on home soil (6-0), making Colorado Golf Club a promising setting for an intense competition.
