Students of Service
The
Town of Parker Recreation Department has developed a new program
specifically for Parker-area high school students. The Students
of Service (SOS) program allows students a great way to complete
community service hours, which are required for graduation in
Douglas County Schools. Participants in the SOS program will create,
develop, and implement recreation programs for teens and other
age groups. Young people need safe, healthy, and fun activities
where they can engage in positive behavior so that they can grow
into healthy adults. New programs must be developed and implemented
continuously to meet un-addressed and emerging needs, and to build
on the strengths and abilities of the youth in our community.
Who better to plan these activities than the youths themselves!
The objectives of the program are to encourage and continue to
provide opportunities for youth participation in our community,
improve communication and awareness of youth recreational and
social programs, and to ensure an ongoing collaboration process
that coordinates, supports, and monitors youth programs and services.
Groups of six students each will be formed to create, develop,
and implement recreation programs for a variety of areas, including
teens, tots, special events, outdoor recreation, older adults,
etc. Groups will be supervised and mentored by recreation staff
and will have three months to complete projects. New groups will
be formed prior to each Activity Guide period. The first session
begins in December to plan for the 2005 Summer Session.
Students interested in the SOS program will need to apply with
a letter of interest, two letters of recommendation, and a completed
application. Applicants should be at least 14 years old and a
freshman in High School.
